Six Rivers state members of the House of Representatives have formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read their official letters of defection during a plenary session this week.
The defecting lawmakers, Dum Dekor, Solomon Bob, Hart Cyril Godwin, Victor Obuzor, Blessing Amadi, and Felix Nweke stated that it was as a result of the irreconcilable divisions and the persistent leadership crisis within the PDP, that led to their exit.
Just weeks earlier, on December 5, 2025, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the number one citizen of Rivers state, defected to the APC. The lawmakers, who are either political allies of the Governor or FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, have now followed suit, making the APC the dominant party in Rivers State for the first time in over a decade.
The PDP is now left with only two representatives, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda and Kelechi Nwogu, out of the 13 members in the Rivers State House of Representatives caucus, with these six exits, and three others that occurred earlier in December.
The lawmakers stated in their letters that the APC provides a better platform and pledged to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda;
The APC, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is providing a better platform for us to serve our people. Our former party is currently plagued by unresolved leadership crises
On the same day, two Rivers State Senators, Allwell Onyesoh and Barinada Mpigi, also announced their defection to the APC on the floor of the Senate, completing the near-total takeover of the state’s federal representation.
The APC National Working Committee is preparing a formal reception for the new members in Port Harcourt.
