Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has made a claim, alleging that the recent surge in kidnappings across Nigeria is not purely criminal but a deliberate, politically motivated strategy designed to destabilise the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking at the Government House in Benin City during an engagement with Igbo leaders, Governor Okpebholo claimed that political opponents are sponsoring abductions to create fear and instability ahead of the 2027 general election. He made reference to the tactics used against former President Goodluck Jonathan’s government.
They are kidnapping people because somebody wants to win an election, it’s not fair. They did this to Goodluck Jonathan and they succeeded, but we know their trick already.
The Governor’s claims come amid the surge in abductions across various regions of the country including the kidnapping of worshippers at the Christ Apostolic Church in the Eruku area of Kwara State in November, the abduction of at least 10 residents in the Biresawa and Tsundu communities in Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State, and the abduction of over 300 students in Niger State.
Despite the alleged political sabotage, Okpebholo maintained that President Tinubu is aware of the trick and he remains resolute and will not be discouraged by the tactics.
