The Executive Chairman of Roni Local Government Area in Jigawa State has provided his constituents with locally made wheelbarrows and brand new water, a move praised by beneficiaries but criticized by others on social media.
Photos circulating online show residents happily holding their new wheelbarrows loaded with water kegs. The initiative aims to assist youths with a tool for carrying water and other goods for commercial purposes and also to make ends mean.
While some Nigerians like @Orogwu James admired the project as a welcome development, others expressed disappointment, calling the empowerment insufficient and irrelevant given the current economic situation of the country.
Na better empowerments ooo. You may not believe how much these people are making with this wheelbarrow. A wheelbarrow of 10 gallons full of water is #1000 over here in Jalingo TARABA state. HALF bread 🥪 is better than none – @Orogwu James
A random social media user with the username @ThomasKanu expressed dissatisfaction stating,
This our politicians no well at all ooo, may God help us
While some appreciate the aid, many call for more substantial development projects.
The debate over what true empowerment means at the grassroots level, and the call for accountability of funds allocated to Local government chairmen, has been the topic of discourse for many years, across nearly all geopolitical zones of NIgeria.
