The Oyo State Police Command has taken into custody Lawal Faruq, who allegedly poured petrol on his ex-lover and set her ablaze after the end of their relationship at a military barracks in Ibadan.
According to reports obtained on Thursday, the incident occurred within a military barracks in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. Counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama revealed on social media that the suspect and the victim, Omolola Hassan, had previously vowed never to separate. However, when their relationship broke down, Faruq reportedly became enraged, dousing Hassan with petrol before igniting the fire.
Military personnel stationed at the barracks intervened quickly, extinguishing the flames and rushing the victim to Yawiri Hospital in Akobo for emergency treatment.The suspect was arrested immediately after the attack and currently remains in police custody, as investigations continue.
Recall, Dawn Herald reported a similar incident where a Lieutenant Samson Haruna, a Nigerian Army officer and medical doctor, died from severe burns after his wife allegedly set him on fire during a domestic dispute at Wellington Bassey Barracks in Akwa Ibom State on September 22.
Officials continue to press for stronger measures to prevent such tragedies, as the investigation proceeds.
