Nigeria claimed a 2-1 victory against Lesotho on Friday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, boosting their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup ahead of the final group stage matches.

The Super Eagles entered the match knowing that only a win could keep their World Cup hopes alive in the tight Group C qualifiers.

Captain William Troost-Ekong opened the scoring with a penalty in the 55th minute, followed by a late goal from debutant Akor Adams in the 80th minute. Lesotho fought back in the final minutes with a goal from Hlompho Kalake, but Nigeria held on to secure all three points.

This win leaves Nigeria three points behind group leaders Benin, who themselves won their match against Rwanda.

South Africa remains a strong contender but suffered a setback with a goalless draw against Zimbabwe in Durban.

Only the group winner automatically qualifies for the World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, while the best runners-up may still progress through playoffs.

The atmosphere at the stadium was tense as Nigerian fans nervously watched the team struggle to maintain their lead late into stoppage time. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made critical saves to preserve the edge, especially during a chaotic moment when he almost allowed an equalizer.

Nigeria must now prepare to face Benin in Uyo in the final group game, needing a win with a two-goal margin to leapfrog them in the standings, with South Africa also in contention.
