The Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairman in Bayelsa State, Julius Laye, has praised the projects of the government but stressed the urgent need for increased staffing in the health sector to maintain service delivery.
Julius Laye stressed that several government achievements in Bayelsa under Governor Douye Diri’s leadership, including major road constructions, the acquisition of two aircraft, installation of gas turbines, and construction of a nine-storey secretariat building.
The government has also made notable achievements in paying salaries on time and settling local government workers’ gratuities, reducing the state’s debt from N27 billion to N12 billion. Despite these accomplishments, Laye expressed concern about the workforce in the health sector.
He pointed out that there have been no new hires in hospitals for a considerable time, even as staff continue to retire. This, he warned, could jeopardize the quality of healthcare services if not addressed promptly.
