A fresh graduate of Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, was tragically killed by a stray bullet during a violent clash between rival cult groups on Tuesday, September 23, shortly after collecting his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) call-up letter.
The incident occurred just outside the college premises, following days of unrest that began Monday, September 22, when gunfire broke out during final-year students’ sign-out celebrations.
A student who witnessed the initial clashes explained that panic ensued as shots rang out, forcing students to scatter for safety. A final-year student was killed at that time.
Taoreed, the graduate, had visited the campus to collect his NYSC call-up letter and was waiting by the roadside to catch a bus home when the reprisal attack unfolded along the Ilesa–Esa-Oke Road. According to police sources, gunmen targeted rival groups in the area, and in the chaos, Taoreed was hit by a stray bullet.Details reveal that though he ran for cover after hearing gunshots, Taoreed was later found unresponsive in a nearby bush. His NYSC call-up letter was discovered inside the black cross bag he carried.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the clash involved cult groups and resulted in two deaths, one immediately on-site, the other in hospital. Arrest efforts for the attackers are underway.
