A tragic incident occurred in Kano early Saturday as Police Inspector, Aminu Ibrahim accidentally shot himself while on duty at the Hotoro Division.
The officer reportedly entered a toilet with his loaded AK-47 rifle slung around his neck. While squatting, the weapon discharged and struck him in the stomach.
He was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital but was confirmed dead.
The rifle was found cocked with one round missing out of 30. The case highlights concerns about firearm safety among security personnel, with experts urging caution, discipline, and regular refresher training to prevent similar tragedies.
Earlier this year, a similar incident occurred in Nasarawa State, where a police officer reportedly shot himself dead mistakenly after retiring to a private room. Also, in Abia State, Inspector Sunday Mefo was said to have fired a round/bullet into his own leg while inspecting his AK-47 before night duty.
