Security forces in Niger State foiled a deadly terrorist attack on Iburu village in Shiroro Local Government Area, killing at least 45 armed men during a fierce gunfight.
The joint operation involved troops of the Nigerian Army, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), and local hybrid forces.
According to a DSS statement released Monday, the security team responded swiftly to intelligence that dozens of terrorists on motorcycles were en route to Iburu and nearby villages. The forces confronted the attackers on Friday evening, leading to a heavy exchange of gunfire.
“The DSS, on receiving intelligence that the terrorists were advancing to attack Iburu, quickly alerted troops on standby,” the statement said. “A gunfight ensued with the troops killing at least 45 terrorists.” Locals reported counting over 40 bodies of the terrorists and numerous destroyed motorcycles.
While the operation was successful in neutralising the threat, the DSS confirmed that two members of the hybrid force died in action. Four others sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical care at a state hospital.
The security agencies commended the bravery of the personnel involved and reaffirmed their commitment to continuing the fight against terrorism in Niger State and other vulnerable areas.
