The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91, marking the end of a remarkable reign that spanned over six decades.

The revered monarch died on Sunday, just hours after news broke of the passing of his close friend and former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Oba Adetona ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, and ruled for more than 64 years, a feat that earned him recognition as one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers. Throughout his time as Awujale, he was widely respected for his wisdom, integrity, and commitment to the cultural heritage of Ijebuland.

His death has drawn tributes from across the country, with many describing him as a symbol of continuity and dignity. “Nigeria has lost an elder statesman in the traditional institution,” a local leader said. Plans for his burial are expected to be announced by the Ijebu traditional council in the coming days.

A statement by Prince Adedire Adetona on behalf of the family said the late revered monarch will be laid to rest at Ogbagba Court, Igbeba at 4pm.
