Ogun State kicked off the 2025 National Sports Festival, dubbed the Gateway Games, with a vibrant opening ceremony on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta. The event, attended by thousands, featured colorful cultural performances, fireworks, and a parade of athletes from 36 states and the FCT.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, who declared the games open, hailed the festival as a celebration of unity and talent, with over 12,000 athletes competing in 88 sports, including athletics, boxing, and table tennis. Upgraded facilities like the Alake Sports Centre were showcased, drawing praise for Ogun’s hosting capacity.
Sports Minister John Enoh, representing President Bola Tinubu, urged athletes to compete with integrity, emphasizing the games’ role in scouting talent for the 2028 Olympics. The ceremony’s energy set a high tone for the week-long competition, ending May 25, 2025.
