Temitope Adeshina and Tima Godbless qualified for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, boosting Nigeria’s hopes.

Nigerian athletes Temitope Adeshina and Tima Godbless earned qualification for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, set for September 13–21 in Tokyo, during the South Eastern Conference (SEC) Championships in Lexington, Kentucky, on Saturday, May 17, 2025. The duo’s performances, reported by PUNCH Sports Extra, highlight Nigeria’s growing track and field prowess.

Adeshina, the national high jump record holder, secured her spot with a 1.94m clearance, reinforcing her status after winning the NCAA indoor title in March 2025. Godbless, representing Louisiana State University, clinched her 200m qualification with a 22.69s sprint, winning her heat and also excelling in the 100m at 11.29s.

Their qualifications add to Nigeria’s seven athletes already confirmed for Tokyo, including sprinter Kanyinsola Ajayi. The SEC Championships showcased other Nigerians, like Samuel Ogazi and Ella Onojuvwevwo, strengthening the nation’s prospects for medals.

The achievements have sparked excitement among fans, with Adeshina and Godbless seen as key contenders to elevate Nigeria’s global athletics standing in Tokyo.
