Customs seize over 35,000 litres of smuggled fuel and illegal goods worth ₦109.5 million

The Nigeria Customs Service, Kebbi Area Command, intercepted 35,725 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and other contraband valued at over ₦109.5 million during an anti-smuggling operations across the state.

Comptroller Mahmoud Ibrahim revealed the seizures during his first press briefing at the Customs headquarters in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday. The confiscations came through coordinated plans involving Operation Whirlwind, a special task force dedicated to tackling smuggling activities in Kebbi.

According to Ibrahim, the joint operations recovered 14,750 litres of PMS valued at ₦8.85 million from Operation Whirlwind and an additional 20,975 litres worth ₦12.58 million from various flashpoints, including Bagudo, Tsamiya, Kamba, and Zuru.

The Command seized 100 bales of used clothing, 444 laptop-sized wraps of Cannabis Sativa, 143 mini sacks of donkey meat, 140 cartons of foreign spaghetti, 100 bags of parboiled rice, and 20 jerrycans of vegetable oil. The total haul was valued at ₦109,595,761. In September alone, Kebbi Command generated ₦25.6 million, a 36.13% increase over the previous month.

The Kebbi Area Command plans to auction the confiscated fuel according to existing laws, with proceeds remitted to the federal treasury. The Command also announced it will hand over seized donkey meat to the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service and cannabis wraps to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, ensuring proper inter-agency action.
