President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has scheduled a second meeting of Nigeria’s Council of State for October 9, 2025, inviting former leaders including Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan to tackle pressing national issues, especially security and governance.

The upcoming meeting will take place at the Council Chambers of the Aso Villa and is planned as a hybrid session, allowing members to join either in person or virtually. The gathering will start at 1 p.m. and will be followed by a Police Council meeting at 2 p.m.

The Council of State serves as a constitutional advisory body that provides guidance to the president on critical national matters such as security policy and appointments. Members include the current president and vice president, former presidents and heads of state, former chief justices, state governors, and the Attorney-General of the Federation.

This will be the second Council of State meeting under President Tinubu’s administration. The first took place on August 13, 2025, with former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari attending physically, while Generals Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar joined virtually. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was absent from that session.

The Police Council will convene to oversee the operations and leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, including matters related to the Inspector-General of Police’s appointment and performance.
