Jeremiah Obaji, a 37-year-old businessman, was handed a N10 million reward by Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru after trekking 633 km from Lagos to Abakaliki in support of peace efforts in the Effium/Ezza-Effium area.
Obaji embarked on the arduous late-August journey as a gesture of solidarity with the governor’s peace campaign in Ohaukwu Local Government, where violent clashes had plagued the community since early 2021. The trek symbolized his deep appreciation for Nwifuru’s work in resolving conflicts through the establishment of five autonomous communities designed to bring stability.
During the trip, Obaji faced intense challenges including hunger, exhaustion, insect bites, and painful blisters that led him to discard his jeans. Fear of kidnapping also shadowed parts of his path.
As word of his journey circulated on social platforms, multiple supporters offered gifts ranging from automobiles and landed estates to cash contributions. To further empower Obaji and sustain his peace mission, Governor Nwifuru announced a financial gift to aid his recuperation and advocacy.
Obaji plans to launch a Peace Foundation aimed at fostering non-violence and supporting children affected by regional conflicts.
