The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announced that the presidential candidacy for the 2027 elections will be allocated to the southern region. The decision was reached during a high-level meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) in Abuja.

‎The meeting, which gathered key party leaders, followed the submission of a report by the Zoning Committee, headed by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri. This group was responsible for assessing regional power-sharing arrangements within the party’s structure. In his briefing to the press, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba conveyed that the committee’s findings guided the NEC’s decisions.

‎Beside the presidential zoning, the assembly resolved that current office holders from the North and South should maintain their National Working Committee roles, ensuring continuity in leadership.

Since the party’s national chairmanship is allocated to the Northern part of Nigeria, it is only fitting that the upcoming presidential nomination be reserved for the South – Ologunagba explained.

This balance, he noted, preserves regional equity in party governance.

Preparations for the PDP’s November convention are reported to be progressing smoothly, with the NEC expressing approval over the organizational readiness. The announcement sets the stage for a politically charged period as aspirants from the southern states intensify their campaigns for the top ticket.
