A coalition of aviation sector unions has suspended its planned strike, which was scheduled to begin on Monday, following last-minute government intervention.

The unions involved include the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE).

In a joint statement, the unions explained that the decision came after the Minister of Aviation and senior officials waded into the matter, coupled with the Budget Office’s issuance of a “no objection” letter to the National Incomes, Salaries and Wages Commission.

They further cited assurances from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) that a long-awaited new remuneration package would be implemented alongside August salaries.

While the industrial action has been put on hold, the unions stressed that the suspension was temporary, pending the actual payment and other developments at the end of the month.

Union leaders urged members to remain optimistic but vigilant, warning that they would not hesitate to resume the strike if the promised changes were not fulfilled.
