The Federal Government has evacuated Nigeria’s index Ebola patient from the Federal Capital Territory for specialised medical treatment abroad.

The medical extraction was executed early Monday morning through a chartered air ambulance.

The patient, who is the wife of a Swiss diplomat, departed from the private jet wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. A secure three-vehicle convoy, arrived at the General Aviation Terminal around 6:00 am to facilitate the transfer.

Airport security personnel immediately cordoned off the private wing while a specialised medivac crew evacuated the passenger due to the highly infectious nature of the disease.

According to sources, the federal government delayed the announcement of the medical evacuation until the aircraft had safely exited Nigerian airspace.

The Federal Government had earlier confirmed the index Ebola case in Abuja on October 20. Medical investigations remain ongoing, with health authorities currently monitoring 44 identified contacts to prevent the spread of the disease.
