Many feared dead as suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detonated along the Yar’Tasha-Dansadau road, in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Saturday, December 27.

The blast, which occurred in the afternoon, reportedly hit a vehicle carrying travelers, leading to multiple fatalities and severe injuries.

The Zamfara State Police Command, through PPRO Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the incident, stating that investigation is underway to ascertain the total numbers of casualties.

According to eyewitnesses, the blast was caused by the implant of IED by bandits to target commuters and security patrol vans.

Videos circulating on social media show a scene of thick smoke rising from the highway and survivors fleeing into nearby bushes for safety.

Despite the recent U.S. precision airstrikes on terrorist camps in Sokoto State, land-based threats from IEDs has been a growing concern for the Nigerian military.
