A Nigerian soldier deployed for internal security duties in the Imota area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, died on Sunday, November 16, after being attacked by an individual described as struggling with mental health issues.
The soldier, attached to the joint military special task force Operation AWASE, around 4:00 pm was fatally struck on the head with a heavy log unexpectedly while attempting to de-escalate a chaotic situation. The AWASE, is a joint task force mandated to combat various crimes, including pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, and banditry in the Lagos and Ogun states axis.
The 81 Division confirmed that the injured soldier was rushed to Ikorodu General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The attacker was neutralized by the soldier’s colleagues at the scene, and the soldier’s weapon was recovered.
