Udinese and Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been suspended for two months by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) over a betting-related offence during the 2023/2024 Serie A season.

The 24-year-old was found guilty of intentionally seeking a yellow card in a match against Lazio to allegedly influence betting outcomes. His actions raised red flags, prompting an investigation into suspicious betting patterns surrounding the game.

In a statement issued by the FIGC’s National Federal Tribunal, the body said, “The National Federal Tribunal, Disciplinary Section, definitively ruling, imposes on Mr Emil Maduka Okoye the sanction of two (2) months of disqualification in official matches, starting from the beginning of the first official competition of the 2025/2026 sporting season.” The tribunal found Okoye guilty of sporting misconduct after a thorough disciplinary hearing.

The ban is set to begin with Udinese’s first official game of the 2025/2026 season and will see Okoye miss six matches, including the Coppa Italia tie against Carrarese on August 18 and the first five Serie A fixtures. He will only become eligible to play again on October 19, when Udinese face Cremonese away from home.

The incident has reignited concerns about the growing influence of illegal betting syndicates on football and the integrity of players’ conduct. Okoye’s involvement has stirred debate in both Italy and Nigeria, particularly given his past role as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper. His struggles since the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, coupled with this suspension, cast further uncertainty on his future with both club and country.

So far, Okoye has not issued any public statement regarding the decision. The situation has further damaged his reputation amid earlier criticism over inconsistent performances. With competition for the national team goalkeeper position tightening, the ban could significantly hinder his prospects of returning to the starting lineup.
