The Standards Organisation of Nigeria destroyed substandard imported products worth billions in Lagos, targeting counterfeit goods to protect consumers.

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) demolished substandard imported products valued at billions of naira in Lagos on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. The exercise, conducted at a designated site in Epe, targeted counterfeit and unsafe goods, including electrical cables, tyres, and beverages.

SON’s Director-General, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, stated that the destroyed items, seized from various markets, failed safety and quality tests, posing risks to consumers and legitimate businesses. The operation followed months of surveillance and raids on warehouses and ports across Nigeria.

Okeke emphasized SON’s zero-tolerance policy for substandard products, urging importers to comply with regulations. The agency also announced plans to intensify market monitoring and collaborate with customs to curb the influx of fake goods.

The destruction drew praise from local manufacturers but sparked concerns among traders about economic losses. SON vowed to continue its crackdown to safeguard Nigeria’s markets and public safety.
