The wife of Zamfara State Governor, Hajiya Huriyya Lawal, organized a cancer awareness walk in Gusau on Saturday to educate residents about early screening and preventive health measures.

The campaign started at Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital and proceeded through major streets in Gusau, including Sani Abacha Way, Central, and Bello Barau Street, before concluding at the Government House.

Hajiya Lawal, accompanied by the Deputy Governor’s wife, civil society groups, medical experts, youth, and women’s organizations, emphasized the critical role of early detection in reducing cancer mortality, particularly among women.

Addressing the crowd at the end of the walk, the First Lady urged residents to adopt regular health checks and healthy lifestyles to lower cancer risks.

Medical professionals at the walk stressed the need for public education on cancer prevention and emphasizing that early diagnosis coupled with prompt treatment could save many lives. They called for sustained awareness campaigns reaching both urban and rural communities.

The “Walk Away Cancer” campaign is a vital step toward enhancing public understanding of cancer in both the rural and urban areas of Zamfara State. Stakeholders hope this program will foster engagement and increase support by the government to strengthen the healthcare sector and to save lives.
