Gunmen ambush in Edo claims eight NSCDC officers, kidnaps Chinese expatriate at BUA cement plant

Eight officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, in a deadly attack on Friday night, lost their lives and a Chinese national was abducted during an assault near the BUA Cement Company in Okpella, Edo State.

The violent confrontation unfolded around 10:30 p.m. along the Okpella-Agenebode road when gunmen targeted a security convoy assigned to escort Chinese workers after a routine patrol. According to sources, the assailants, equipped with advanced firearms, ambushed the group, killing eight civil defence personnel and seriously injuring four others, including one civilian. The convoy was protecting a team of five Chinese expatriates, of whom one was taken hostage while the remaining four were safely recovered.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps issued an official release confirming the incident and identifying the victims, including Chief Corps Assistant Oluwatosin Sunday from the Ondo State Command. The statement mourned the loss as profound and called for solidarity with the families affected by the tragedy.

An eyewitness at the scene described the attack as “sudden and ruthless,” emphasizing the bravery of the officers who attempted to repel the gunmen despite overwhelming odds.

Authorities continue to prioritize the rescue operation, urging public calm and cooperation as investigations progress.

Investigative efforts are underway with collaboration from multiple security agencies aiming to apprehend those responsible and secure the release of the kidnapped individual.
