The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force to launch an investigation into a viral video showing youths chanting threats against Christians.

The apex Christian body warned that the country cannot afford to treat such threats lightly given its history of religious tensions.

The footage features a young man leading a group of boys in chants advocating attacks on Christians in Enugu and Jos during Sunday worship.

CAN expressed deep concern over the involvement of minors in the video, warning that exposing children to religious hatred could trigger severe security consequences.

The statement signed by the CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, demanded that security agencies establish the exact location of the recording, identify those involved, and apprehend any underlying financiers.

“Religious leaders across Nigeria also have a responsibility to reject, unequivocally, any teaching, slogan or activity that promotes hatred or violence against people of another faith. CAN stands for justice, religious freedom and peaceful coexistence.”

While acknowledging that the leadership of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS) has openly disavowed the video, CAN maintained that their position should not replace an independent security probe and that those culpable must face the full wrath of the law to prevent future occurrences.

Archbishop Okoh urged calm among Christians across the country, advising the faithful to remain vigilant and law-abiding while investigations are ongoing.

He also cautioned against any form of retaliation that could worsen the security situation, emphasising that every Nigerian is entitled to equal protection.
