A bloody week of coordinated terror attacks across Zamfara State has claimed the lives of many civilians and security operatives, forcing hundreds of residents to abandon their communities.
In the latest attack on Sunday, bandits ambushed traders travelling from Gwashi district to Gurusu market in Bukkuyum LGA. Dawn Herald gathered that at least eight security personnel, including soldiers, mobile policemen, and a civil defence operative, were killed alongside 12 civilians during the attack.
This incident comes a day after bandits ambushed commuters along Magamin Maitarko route in Maru LGA, setting 12 vehicles ablaze. The attack occurred on Saturday shortly after military operatives successfully discovered and neutralised improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted on the highway.
Meanwhile, three members of the Askarawa vigilante group were reportedly killed in Damba district, Gusau, following a targeted ambush. Residents suspect that informants tracked the local guards to a rice farm in Kaikaiche village before alerting the terrorists.
Also, earlier this week, residents of Bindin village in Bungudu LGA reported an attack by a notorious bandit commander on a local gold mining site, who reportedly pursued miners into the village, which resulted in an unconfirmed number of casualties.
In response to the escalating threats, the Nigerian Army has activated three new infantry battalions in the state. Speaking of the crisis, the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Abubakar Nakwada reiterated the commitment of the administration to provide all legitimate tactical support for security formations until communities are safe, livelihoods are restored, and residents can pursue their daily activities without fear.
