More than 1,000 Islamic scholars have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to drop his 2027 re-election plans, due to economic hardship, insecurity, and a rising brain drain across the country.
The resolution was reached in a communiqué issued at the end of a national conference in Kano State titled, “An Assessment of the State of the Nation under President Tinubu and the 2027 General Elections.”
The event was organized by Ko Da Naka… For the Struggle to Promote Good Governance and Community Development in partnership with the AFAQ Educational Foundation.
During the conference, participating clerics criticized several core economic policies of the administration, stating that the fuel subsidy removal, the floating of the naira exchange rate, electricity tariff hikes, and recent tax reforms as key drivers of the rising cost of living.
The scholars added that instead of the reforms to provide relief, it has increased financial strain on ordinary Nigerian households.
“It is unfortunate that the government has continued to insist on pursuing these policies, which are increasing hardship among the people, rather than reviewing and correcting them,” the communiqué stated.
The scholars also raised concerns over persistent insecurity, particularly banditry and terrorism affecting communities in the North-West.
The clerics also warned about the rapid exodus of skilled Nigerian professionals including doctors, engineers, and teachers, leaving the country for better opportunities abroad. They urged the government to improve salaries and working conditions to retain local talent and attract diaspora professionals back home.
The scholars advised President Tinubu to voluntarily step aside in 2027 if his administration fails to address these concerns, stating that voters should evaluate candidates based on competence, integrity, and track record rather than party or ethnic loyalties.
