Two men have been remanded in police custody in Bauchi State after they allegedly refused to show their vehicle papers and physically attacked officers on duty.

The incident happened on Saturday, October 3, where police officers from ‘E’ Division Patrol Team were carrying out a routine stop-and-search under a police exercise called “Operation Velvet” along Yelwa Road in Bauchi.

During the check, the officers stopped a vehicle driven by a man identified as Friday, who was travelling with another man named Yunana Ali.

Dawn Herald gathered that when the patrol team politely asked to see the particulars of the vehicle, the situation quickly went south, where the two men, instead of handing over the documents, allegedly became hostile, refused to present the papers and resorted to fighting the officers.

During the fight, the suspects allegedly tore the uniform of a Police Inspector, before they were overpowered, arrested and remanded at the ‘E’ Division police station.

The Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Sunday.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the attack, describing it as an insult to the law and a deliberate attempt to stop officers from keeping the public safe.

The Commissioner warned that the police command will not tolerate citizens attacking officers who are simply doing their lawful duties. He advised members of the public to use the right official channels if they have any genuine complaints about police conduct, rather than taking the law into their own hands.

The police have confirmed that the two suspects will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is complete. The command is also urging residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agents to maintain public peace.
