Rotimi Amaechi, the Vice-Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says he will resign as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate and campaign for President Bola Tinubu if the price of petrol falls to ₦600 per litre.

Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transportation, made this declaration during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday.

He criticized the economic reforms of the Tinubu administration, particularly the removal of the fuel subsidy, arguing it has made life harder for Nigerians. Amaechi added that despite government promises, the cost of living and transportation has not reduced.

Amaechi challenged critics to join him at a filling station on Saturday morning, promising to step down as Atiku’s running mate and campaign for Tinubu if petrol truly sells for ₦600 per litre.

“If fuel has come down to 600 I will campaign for President Tinubu…Tomorrow, if you are doubtful come with your camera tomorrow in the morning and I will go to a filling station and I will buy fuel, if it comes down to this thing, I Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi will withdraw as the vice presidential candidate of Atiku and campaign for President Tinubu if it has come down”, Amaechi.

The former governor claimed that the Tinubu administration is more openly corrupt than former President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.

“Corruption under Buhari is not as bad as this under Tinubu… The difference is that when you are corrupt you hide it, these people are not hiding it, it’s so glaring”, Amaechi.

He also argued that the current government has failed to deliver infrastructure projects, challenging the administration to name a single completed project, making reference to the proposed ₦33 trillion Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as an example of questionable spending.
