Nigerian Army activates 3 new battalions in Zamfara to fight terrorism

The Nigerian Army has officially launched three new infantry battalions in Zamfara State to tighten security and speed up its response to local threats.

The newly activated units are the 12 Infantry Battalion in Bakura, the 23 Infantry Battalion in Kaura Namoda, and the 28 Infantry Battalion in Anka. An official statement shared on X by the 1 Brigade in Gusau on Tuesday confirmed that these units will expand the military’s coverage and secure their specific local zones.

During the activation ceremonies, Colonel Joseph Umaru spoke on behalf of Major General BP Koughna, the General Officer Commanding the 8 Division. He stressed that the military remains fully committed to protecting law-abiding citizens in the state.

Colonel Umaru also reminded the newly deployed troops to stay disciplined and professional. He urged them to strictly follow established rules of engagement while carrying out their duties.

Umaru emphasised the need for teamwork, stressing that lasting peace requires the cooperation of security agencies, traditional institutions, and local communities. He called on all residents to support the troops by providing credible and actionable intelligence.

Traditional rulers in the affected local governments warmly received the new deployments. The Emir of Bakura, Alhaji Bello Sani; the Emir of Anka, Alhaji Attahiru Muhammad Ahmad and the Emir of Kaura Namoda, Major Dr. Sanusi Mohammed Ahmed (rtd), all praised the initiative.

The monarchs promised to support the military through active community mobilization and information sharing.
