Armed bandits have kidnapped at least 20 female farmers on Saturday, while working on a groundnut farm in Mukura village, located in the Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
The Niger State Police Command through it Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed receiving reports of the raid on Monday. He stated that over 20 farmers were abducted and that joint security forces have been dispatched to rescue them.
However, the Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Aliyu Bagga Muhamadu, while speaking to the press reported that at least 47 women working in the groundnut field were abducted by the armed group.
“Forty-seven people were abducted, and reports reaching me indicate that one of the women has given birth in their custody”, Chairman Muhamadu.
The chairman added that the kidnappers have already reached out to the victims’ families, demanding a ransom of N2 million per person for their release.
According to reports, combined team of military personnel and local vigilante groups is currently trailing the attackers through neighboring forest areas to secure the safe release of the captives.
