Correctional officers have arrested a woman, Shobowale Balikis, after she tried to sneak alcohol disguised as drinking water into Ibara Custodial Centre in Ogun State.
The incident happened on Saturday afternoon when officers stopped Balikis during a routine security check at the prison gates. She had carefully hidden ethanol inside a packaged water pack, hoping to pass it off as regular bottled water meant for an inmate.
However, officers on duty detected the substance before it could get inside the facility.
Balikis has since been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for investigation and possible prosecution.
Ogun State Correctional Command spokesperson, Olayinka Odukoya, confirmed the arrest and praised the officers for their quick intervention.
This arrest comes just weeks after another woman was caught trying to smuggle hard drugs hidden in a beverage pack for her son on death row at the same facility.
The Controller of Corrections in Ogun State, Abioye Adesina, used the opportunity to warn the public against such illegal acts. He stated that the prison maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy on contraband and will make sure anyone caught faces the full weight of the law.
