Two inmates have died following a confirmed cholera outbreak at Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kano State.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) announced the incident on Saturday, assuring the public that the situation is now fully under control.
The health crisis began on September 17 when an inmate suddenly developed severe diarrhoea and vomiting, which led prison health workers to admit the patient immediately to the medical centre facility and activated emergency health protocols the next morning.
Medical officials, after conducting a series of laboratory tests on September 23, confirmed the disease as cholera, but unfortunately, the outbreak claimed two lives, one inside the custodial centre and another at the Kano State Infectious Diseases Hospital.
NCoS spokesman JN Osuji, praised the medical team for quick intervention and for stopping the disease from spreading further among the inmates.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service has confirmed that a cholera outbreak at the Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kano has been contained…No further deaths have been recorded since the outbreak was confirmed”, the statement.
Meanwhile, the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, has sent a team of senior medical personnel from Abuja headquarters to Kano, to keep inmates safe and prevent the infection from returning.
The prison authorities are currently working closely with the Kano State Government to monitor the facility, improve hygiene measures, and ensure all inmates have safe access to qualified healthcare.
