Nigerian military troops have rescued six kidnapped family members and killed a suspected terrorist during two separate security operations in Zamfara and Sokoto states.
Troops from Operation Fansan Yamma carried out the operation over the weekend, acting on a verified tip to raid a terrorist hideout near Karani village in Gudu Local Government Area. A fierce gun battle broke out, leaving one terrorist dead while others escaped into the nearby forest.
After the shootout, the troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, live ammunition, a motorcycle, military camouflage uniforms and also rescued six people held captive in the area.
Meanwhile, in Zamfara State, soldiers from the 17 Brigade stopped a kidnapping attempt in Tsafe Local Government Area. The troops engaged the armed attackers, forcing them to run away and abandon six members of a single family they had just abducted. The victims were rescued unharmed and taken to a safe place for medical checks before being reunited with their relatives.
Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, spokesman for the military’s 8 Division, in a statement on Sunday, confirmed the successful raid in Sokoto, praising the military for responding with heavy firepower.
“The successful operation demonstrates the resolve and capability of troops of Operation Fansan Yamma to disrupt terrorist activities,” Osoba stated.
He added that soldiers are already patrolling the surrounding forests to hunt down the escaping attackers and prevent them from regrouping.
