APC sweeps Yobe LG elections, claims all 17 chairmanship seats

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a massive victory in the Yobe State local government elections, winning all 17 chairmanship positions and 176 out of 178 councillorship seats.

The Chairman of the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YOSIEC), Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Yabani, announced the official results on Sunday in Damaturu, acknowledging that the elections, which took place on Saturday, went smoothly across the 17 local government areas and 178 wards of the state.

While the ruling APC completely dominated the chairmanship race, two opposition parties managed to grab one councillorship seat each. The Action Peoples Party (APP) won a seat in Fune Local Government Area, while the Action Democratic Party (ADP) picked up a seat in Karasuwa Local Government Area.

Yabani stated that the councillorship results were first declared at the ward level, while the chairmanship results were then compiled at local government centers before the final tally at the state headquarters.

He also took a moment to observe a minute of silence for his predecessor, the late Dr. Mamman Mohammed, who originally started the election preparations in April 2025.

The Yobe State chapter of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), which represents all registered political parties, described the exercise as free, fair, and credible.

Comrade Umar Adamu Jajere, the IPAC Chairman, praised YOSIEC for its proper planning and transparent voting process. He also thanked the police, the military, and other security agencies for keeping the peace and giving voters confidence to step out.

Jajere stated that for the opposition to win two councillorship seats, shows that the electorate is paying attention and no single party completely controls the choices of voters.

He also applauded Governor Mai Mala Buni for providing the necessary resources and stepping back to let the voting process run without state interference.

“This is the hallmark of a true democrat. You resisted the temptation to interfere and allowed the will of the people to prevail,” Jajere said.

The newly elected officials will soon take office to manage affairs at the grassroots level. IPAC has encouraged the winners to focus on serving their communities fairly and advised the losing candidates to accept the outcome and remain resilient.
