Workers in Zamfara State’s tertiary institutions have given the state government a two-week ultimatum to settle their unpaid allowances and salary demands, warning they will shut down schools if they are ignored.
The Forum of Zamfara State Tertiary Institutions (FOZASTI) issued the ultimatum on Friday in Gusau, stating that the government has constantly failed to resolve issues affecting the welfare of its staff.
The workers are demanding the full implementation of standard salary scales, specifically CONPCASS and CONTEDISS, which apply to staff in higher institutions. They are also asking the government to pay the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) for eligible academic staff.
The forum stated that the unresolved issues are hurting the motivation and professional growth of workers, which in turn affects the smooth running of the schools.
According to a statement signed by FOZASTI Chairman, Yusuf Magaji Mada, the group took this step because previous meetings with government officials yielded only empty promises instead of concrete actions.
“If the outstanding issues are not satisfactorily addressed at the expiration of the two-week ultimatum, we may be compelled to commence industrial action,” Mada stated.
He added that while the forum still prefers a peaceful resolution, this notice serves as a final warning to the authorities.
Mada urged all workers and chapter chairmen across the state’s institutions to remain calm, united, and disciplined as they awaited the government’s response.
