Ilenikhena, Usor rescue Super Eagles in 2-1 win over Madagascar

Nigeria’s Super Eagles came from behind to defeat Madagascar 2-1 in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Friday, with goals from two new faces to secure all three points.

The match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo started poorly for the home side. Madagascar stunned the crowd by scoring first, utilizing a quick transition to beat Nigeria’s goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and take an early lead.

Nigeria responded right before the halftime whistle as George Ilenikhena found the back of the net in the first minute of stoppage time. The goal tied the game 1-1 and gave the young forward a memorable start to his senior national team career.

The Super Eagles took total control after the break. Captain Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi dominated the midfield, keeping Madagascar pinned in their own half. The constant pressure eventually paid off when Moses Usor, also making his senior debut, fired in the winning goal.

This comeback gave coach Eric Chelle a winning start to his Group L campaign. It also reassured fans that the squad could still deliver results without star forward Victor Osimhen, who missed the game due to an injury.

Nigeria currently sits second in Group L, tied on three points with Guinea-Bissau but trailing on goal difference. The Super Eagles will look to take the top spot when they travel to face Guinea-Bissau in their next match on Tuesday, September 29.
