Four teenage girls have died in a boat accident in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, while four other passengers were rescued alive.
The incident occurred around 4:00 pm on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at Dudduru Pond, just a few kilometres from Kwadige Village. The passengers were travelling across the water to the Chai Chai Sabuwa Market when their boat suddenly overturned.
The Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) confirmed the accident on Thursday. According to the agency, early reports suggest that strong winds caused the boat to capsize.
Farmers who were working near the pond quickly rushed to the scene and managed to pull four passengers to safety. Residents from nearby communities also stepped in to help with the rescue efforts but sadly, four teenage girls did not survive.
The NSCDC identified the victims as 13-year-old Hasiya Mu’azu, 13-year-old Hauwa Lawan, 12-year-old Fatima Lawan, and 13-year-old Dawsiyya Lawan. Their bodies have already been buried according to Islamic rites.
The NSCDC State Commandant, Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa, sent his condolences to the grieving families and the Kwadige community. He warned residents who rely on water transport to be extra careful, especially when the weather is bad.
“We urge communities that depend on boats for transportation to exercise caution when travelling on waterways, particularly during strong winds and adverse weather conditions,” the NSCDC advised.
The NSCDC and other related authority are working hand in hand to enforce basic safety rules in waterways. The agency advise boat operators to avoid travelling during heavy winds to prevent future accidents.
