Chief Willie Obiano, the former Governor of Anambra State, has reportedly died in London, United Kingdom.

Sources close to the family and medical officials indicate that Obiano passed away after a period of declining health, specifically battling heart failure and complications related to urinary cancer.

His death occurs while he was facing a trial in Nigeria on charges of money laundering and misappropriation of over ₦4 billion from the state treasury. Obiano served as the Governor of Anambra State from March 2014 to March 2022.

At the time of his death, Obiano was standing trial on a nine-count charge of alleged money laundering. The trial, which had seen testimony from several prosecution witnesses regarding the management and alleged diversion of the state’s security vote account, had recently been reassigned to Justice Mohammed Umar at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

In early 2022, shortly after leaving office, Obiano’s legal team stated he was traveling for urgent medical treatment in the US for a semi-fatal condition, which was later confirmed by an unnamed source to be cancer detected at an early stage.

The trial was scheduled to continue on November 25. The death of the defendant will now typically lead to the termination of the criminal proceedings against him.
