12 passengers traveling by Toyota Hiace from Abuja to Benin were kidnapped in Kogi State along the Okene-Auchi highway on Friday. The attack reportedly occurred around midday when the vehicle was ambushed by gunmen.

The travelers, including recently called lawyers returning from an Abuja ceremony, were seized in a violent snatch-and-grab.  Eyewitnesses recounted how the captors quickly forced the victims into nearby bushland, disappearing from public view.

Local security forces swiftly responded to the crisis. Police and military personnel worked together to pursue the culprits, launching a rescue operation aimed at freeing the hostages and apprehending those responsible. Early reports indicate that eight individuals, including the driver, have been successfully saved.

Police Spokesperson SP William Aya, representing the Kogi state command, stated that the kidnappers targeted a Big Joe Ventures Ltd Toyota Hiace bus (registration Edo FUG 13 XY) en route from Abuja to Benin. All 12 passengers were taken captive. He added that subsequent collaboration between the police divisional officer, military units, and vigilante groups led to the rescue of eight victims.
