Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano state has given his approval to legislation aimed at banning same-sex marriage alongside other acts deemed immoral within the state. The draft law is slated for presentation to the House of Assembly for further consideration.

According to a statement released on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, this decision was reached during the 31st Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Kano.

The draft prohibits not only same-sex unions but also practices locally known as Madugo and Liwadi, terms referring respectively to lesbianism and homosexuality.

Dawakin-Tofa added that Governor Yusuf stated the purpose of the bill as a safeguard for Kano’s cultural and religious values. He also cautioned that anyone found violating the proposed regulation would be subject to stringent penalties once it is enacted into law.
