A first-year student at Yobe State University in Damaturu, Amina Yakubu, lost her life in a road accident on Saturday near the university’s gate, as reported on Sunday.

The accident occurred on Gujba Road, where military activities have led to lane reductions, forcing vehicles into a single line. According to SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the police spokesperson for Yobe State Command, impatience and other factors among drivers often trigger collisions in this congested zone. On the day of the crash, Amina, along with several other students, were passengers on a tricycle when the incident happened, resulting in fatal injuries for Amina and minor injuries to four others, all of whom received hospital treatment.

The tragedy has deeply impacted the university community. Abdulkarim expressed his condolences to Amina’s family while urging the government and local authorities to address the root causes of such incidents. He emphasized the need for safer road behaviors and recommended specialized training for commercial tricycle riders (Keke NAPEP) to better manage public transport safety.

Spokesperson SP Dungus Abdulkarim said,

This should be a wake-up call for the entire community that reckless and dangerous driving is claiming more lives every day. Government presence must be heightened to prevent further tragedies…commercial riders must prioritize safety for themselves and others, and I strongly advocate training programs to improve their skills

Amina Yakubu was laid to rest according to Islamic rites. Authorities and transport operators are called to collaborate on solutions that protect lives and secure safer transit routes within the community.
