Prof. Christopher Piwuna of UniJos clinched ASUU’s presidency, defeating Professor Adamu Babayo in a tight election during the union’s national conference in Abuja.
Prof. Christopher Piwuna from the University of Jos (UniJos) has been elected president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), succeeding Prof. Victor Osodeke. The election took place during ASUU’s national conference at the University of Abuja, concluding early Sunday.
Piwuna, a professor of medicine, secured 216 votes, narrowly defeating Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi., who garnered 167 votes.
The closely contested election underscored the competitive nature of ASUU’s leadership selection.
The conference, attended by delegates from university branches across Nigeria, also tackled pressing issues, including unresolved demands from the 2022 strike. Piwuna’s leadership is expected to prioritize enhanced funding for universities and improved academic welfare.
The new executive committee will serve a two-year term, steering ASUU through critical engagements with the federal government.
