Former Bayelsa Military Administrator Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade, 70, died in Lagos after collapsing during a lawn tennis game, leaving a legacy of development.
Navy Captain Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade (retd), former Military Administrator of Bayelsa State, passed away at 70 in Lagos on Sunday evening. The Ipoti-Ekiti-born officer collapsed while playing lawn tennis and was pronounced dead shortly after, sources confirmed.
Olubolade served as Bayelsa’s Military Administrator from June 27, 1997, to July 9, 1998, under General Sani Abacha’s regime. He is credited with laying a foundational framework for the state’s development, notably constructing the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa. His tenure is remembered for fostering peace and progress in the Ijaw-populated state.
The news, shared widely on X, prompted tributes from Bayelsans, including Governor Douye Diri, who praised Olubolade’s disciplined leadership. During Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency, Olubolade served as Minister of Special Duties, Federal Capital Territory, and Police Affairs.
His death has sparked an outpouring of condolences, with many celebrating his contributions to Bayelsa’s growth. Burial arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
