A woman identified as Mariya Abdullahi has allegedly poisoned her co-wife’s two children in the Takuti community of Lapai Local Government Area, Niger State.

The suspect confessed to the police that she was influenced by a friend to commit the act because she could not bear a child for her husband.

The incident occurred on Friday when the children, aged four and nine, drank a suspected poisonous substance from a cup allegedly provided by Abdullahi.

One child died shortly after consuming the substance, while the second child was rushed to a general hospital and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday;

“The Police operatives moved to the scene, discovered the two children, who were 9 & 4yrs, were given the substance to drink, and as a result, they became unconscious. They were immediately rushed to a nearby clinic, but on arrival at the clinic, one of the victims gave up the ghost and the other was referred to the general hospital responding to the treatment.”

Abiodun confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and is undergoing interrogation at the Lapai Division. He added that the case will soon be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna for diligent prosecution.
