The Senate President urged serving state executives to complete their two-term tenures rather than abandoning their people for political ambitions.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has cautioned governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against abandoning their states to pursue unavailable political offices.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja during the inauguration of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Akpabio urged serving state executives to focus on completing their constitutionally guaranteed eight-year tenures.

The Senate President, who served as Governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2015, stated that long-term political success depends on commitment to the electorate rather than premature ambition.

“For my brothers who are governors, I want you to know that you must not abandon your people. I did eight years as a governor. And the constitution says you should do eight years. There’s no need for you to start eyeing another position that is not available”, Akpabio stated.

The warning comes months after the Senate amended its standing rules, that only lawmakers with at least eight years of legislative experience, equivalent to two full terms in the National Assembly are eligible to contest for the positions of Senate President and Deputy Senate President.

Akpabio stated that political actors must remain grounded with the populace, adding that his 25-year political track record was built on standing firmly with the people.
