The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has received backing from his colleagues for a second term as the presiding officer of the 11th National Assembly. Lawmakers declared during Thursday’s plenary that there is “no vacancy” for the position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Senate Chief Whip, Senator Tahir Monguno, representing Borno North, alongside Senator Cyril Fasuyi of Ekiti North, spearheaded the declarations on the floor of the upper legislative chamber. Monguno expressed optimism that the majority of the incumbent lawmakers would return to the Senate and retain the current principal officers.
“Insha Allah, by the grace of God, the majority of us are going to make it back to the Senate, and this seat is hereby declared: there is no vacancy”, Monguno.
Senator Fasuyi insisted that the office of the Senate President in the next Assembly is already secured and not open to challengers.
“I hereby support the motion ably moved by Senator Monguno that the seat of the Senate President in the 11th Assembly is not open to any contest. It is already occupied by Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio,” Fasuyi said.
The lawmakers expressed confidence during Thursday’s plenary that the incumbent presiding officer will comfortably retain his seat as chairman of the National Assembly in 2027.
After the declarations, Akpabio called for a voice vote to confirm the position of the chamber. An overwhelming “aye” swept across the floor, with no audible opposition to the declaration.
