The Federal Government has commenced the reconstruction and dualisation of the Lambata-Bida-Mokwa-Makera-Kontagora Federal Highway in Niger State with an investment of ₦1.8 trillion.
Governor Umaru Bago, representing President Bola Tinubu, officially flagged off the project aimed at easing the movement of people and commercial goods.
Speaking at the flag-off in Bida, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed that Niger State currently accounts for 1,055 kilometres of the 5,500-kilometre federal road network under construction nationwide. He confirmed that 162 kilometres of roads and 115 metres of bridges have already been completed across the North-Central region.
Umahi described the intervention as a key component of the infrastructure development programme of the current administration. He revealed that its sheer scale, the deployment of reinforced concrete pavement technology, and the involvement of the Dangote Group through the Federal Government’s infrastructure tax-credit scheme rank it as a legacy project.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who spoke on behalf of the Federal Executive Council, corroborated the ₦1.8 trillion investment on behalf of the Federal Executive Council. He maintained that the Mokwa-Lambata-Tegina highway will drastically improve rural connectivity.
The Special Adviser to the President of the Dangote Group, Mansir Ahmed, explained that the highway would abandon conventional asphalt and rely exclusively on concrete pavement. He stated that contractors would commence work from four distinct locations simultaneously to ensure rapid construction and timely delivery.
“The completed highway will facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce, commercial goods and industrial materials while creating economic opportunities for businesses and young people”, Ahmed.
Governor Bago commended the Federal Government for the infrastructure investments in the region. He also stated that the state would reciprocate by mobilising electoral support for the President in the next election.
