The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has publicly declared himself the field commander of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former Rivers State governor made the declaration on Monday during a Rainbow Coalition stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, to personally coordinate the president’s political mobilisation across both the FCT and Rivers State.
The gathering brought together serving and former senators, political actors, and grassroots leaders from both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
During the parley, several PDP National Assembly candidates in the territory openly declared support for president Tinubu re-election. Wike stated that the cross-party alliance is structured to secure Tinubu’s second term in office, urging politicians to shelve party affiliations for the presidential race.
“For the Presidency, all of us have agreed that it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I will coordinate the FCT and Rivers State. So you can imagine how important it is. I am in charge of the FCT election. I am the commander of field operations as far as the FCT election is concerned,” the minister stated.
Wike challenged critics to identify any of the six area councils in the capital city that have not benefited from ongoing infrastructure projects. He noted that the recent establishment of the FCT Civil Service Commission and the creation of the Women Affairs and Youth Development secretariats have expanded career opportunities for civil servants.
While acknowledging the current economic hardship faced by citizens, the minister reiterated his commitment to the president’s economic policies. He described the ongoing reforms as necessary steps to fix long-standing institutional decay, maintaining that economic recovery requires time rather than instant miracles.
