Commercial and transit activities along the Jega-Kontagora highway were totally grounded over the weekend as residents took to the street to protest the relentless operations of the Lakurawa terrorist group, which has forced hundreds to flee their ancestral homes.
The demonstrators completely shut down the major transit route, leaving motorists and commuters stranded for hours before the police intervened to restore order and reopen the road to traffic.
According to DailyTrust, hundreds of displaced persons, including victims from Mayama and Ungushi communities in Sokoto State, are currently seeking refuge in Jega.
From the report, Nazeer Muhammad, a resident of one of the affected communities, disclosed that his own town is heavily overwhelmed by the influx of fleeing villagers running for safety.
“Our town is currently flooded with displaced persons, some of whom are sleeping in the open,” Muhammad stated.
Another resident, Malam Idris, stated that at least eight trucks conveying displaced persons arrived in the community on Sunday, with hundreds forced to take refuge in public schools, while many others had nowhere to stay and are surviving on handouts from good Samaritans.
